Concurrent Session 5B – Environmental Justice Implications for Brownfields Redevelopment

Environmental justice is one of the hottest topics in the redevelopment world.

This 1-hour session will examine the proposed and already-effective environmental justice laws in BCONE member states. The focus will be on the states that have advanced their initiatives the furthest, especially New Jersey which recently proposed the nation’s first environmental justice regulations requiring state agencies to evaluate environmental and public health impacts when reviewing certain permit applications.

The panel discussion will include the practical impacts of these laws and regulations on brownfield redevelopments as well as potential hurdles posed by environmental justice regulations. Attendees will leave this session with a greater understanding of the substance of environmental justice laws and their anticipated real-world impact.
