Concurrent Session 2A – Technical Assistance: Community Engagement in Brownfields Redevelopment

The session will focus on the importance of community engagement in the process of brownfields redevelopment. Community involvement is key to a successful brownfields revitalization project, in all phases of planning, assessment, and redevelopment of brownfields. It is important that the community’s vision is reflected in the brownfields redevelopment plan, and that stakeholders provide their input. Yet, stakeholder engagement is often perceived as a process that will slow down the progress of the project. Several groups of the community might have been excluded from the dialogue for years, particularly in environmental justice communities. The session will share common barriers to stakeholder engagement and best practices for effective community engagement in communities impacted by brownfield sites.
